Full time (12 month contract), or part time (2 year contract)

Deirdre Murphy (1975-2018) was Senior Curator at Kensington Palace. Her research interrogated a range of subjects relating to court culture, especially fashion and historic interiors. Most recently, she was completing a book on young Queen Victoria.

Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) is offering a 12-month Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Deirdre’s memory. The Fellowship is designed for postdoctoral researchers who have completed a PhD since 1 October 2015.

Research undertaken during the Fellowship will be carried out in consultation with the Head of Research and is expected to result in outputs such as, but not limited to, articles for submission to peer-reviewed journals and (if appropriate) a contribution to an exhibition. Successful applicants will also be expected to present their research at conferences and/or seminars on behalf of HRP. Proposals for creative, public-facing outputs are also welcome.

For a flavour of the research which HRP’s research-active staff are conducting, please visit our Curators’ Blog at https://blog.hrp.org.uk/curators/

The Research Fellow will join HRP’s Research Team to conduct research into any aspect of British royal and court history. However, applications are particularly welcome from researchers who wish to contribute to knowledge in one or more of the following areas:

• Court and royal fashion (including the fashion of Diana, Princess of Wales)
• Kensington Palace
• Queen Victoria

Applications for Fellows who would prefer to conduct their research part-time over two years are welcome and should stipulate their intention to do so in the application.

When uploading your CV, please ensure the document attachment also includes a proposal for research to be conducted during the Fellowship and a statement from you describing how your proposed research will contribute to the interpretation of HRP’s palaces, collections, and/or estates.

References will be contacted at interview stage. Interviews will be held in early July.
