Our planet is facing twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. The risk is acute and current, and the consequences are daunting. Historic Royal Palaces is a charity responsible for looking after 6 of the nation’s most important buildings and estates for public benefit. We are directly impacted by the impact of climate change and biodiversity loss, and through our activities also contribute to the causes of it. We are therefore committed to working towards net zero in carbon emissions by 2050 and are looking for a Sustainability Programme Manager to help us achieve this.

As Sustainability Programme Manager you’ll lead the development and delivery of our plans to achieve this objective, working with experts across the organisation to identify priority actions and the resources needed. You’ll develop business cases and present them to senior stakeholders, subsequently monitoring progress and reporting on it.

You’ll work collaboratively across teams, constructively challenging and influencing in order to embed our sustainability agenda into everyday behaviour and decision making. You’ll support delivery by relevant departments, project managing in certain instances.

Keeping up to date with best practice externally, you will ensure we learn effectively from others. You’ll represent the organisation in key stakeholder meetings and build your network with key industry contacts, supporting our fundraising in all aspects related to the Sustainability Programme and managing relevant project and operating budgets.

The ideal candidate will have experience of developing business cases, managing large programme budgets, and implementing strategies in sustainability across multi-site and multi-discipline organisations. They will be experienced in leading the cultural and behavioural change to support a sustainability agenda, skilfully managing internal and external stakeholder relations. Data management and reporting alongside experience working in a matrix management structure are also required.

Extensive knowledge and expertise across all aspects of environmental sustainability, including good understanding of policies and regulations is required. Good knowledge of programme and project management methods as well as of budgeting and resource allocation procedures is also expected. They will also have strong analytical skills and the ability to think strategically, finding ways to solve and pre-empt problems. A BSc or MSc level within an environmental or sustainability/energy-based degree is also desirable.

With a passion for the subject and a personal drive to succeed, they will be people focussed and passionate about changing cultures and behaviours, with excellent interpersonal, facilitation and negotiation skills. They will have strong presentation skills, including the ability to translate complex issues into clear and compelling narratives to drive actions. The ability to thrive in a very small team, with a real can-do attitude and a proactive attitude to finding resolutions are also necessary.
