This role will involve working 36 hours per week Monday to Friday, however there may be a requirement to work some evenings and weekends.

Hillsborough Castle is a working Royal Residence, the base for the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and a great place for the public to visit.  In 2014 the operation of the Castle was passed from the Northern Ireland Office to Historic Royal Palaces (HRP). It will continue to act as a residence but there has been considerable investment to increase public access, improve the visitor experience significantly and tell the stories of its fascinating history and glorious gardens. An essential part of this major development is the recruitment of a high calibre and highly professional team to transform Hillsborough Castle into a ‘must see’ destination.

This is an exciting time to join us as the Gardens Manager with over 100 acres of grounds as well as a further 10 acres within the Fort Grounds and 20 different character areas identified. You will also be responsible for the upkeep of the car park grounds with over 4000 trees and shrubs planted. The successful candidate will lead and develop our dedicated gardens team ensuring the highest standards of presentation throughout our iconic gardens. Your role will include designing planting schemes, planning and scheduling work for the team and providing the technical expertise required to implement strategic projects that deliver our conservation plans and annual operating plans for Hillsborough Gardens and the Fort grounds.

You will also be responsible for the co-ordination of all training and purchase of goods and services as well as the provision of gardens interpretation, supporting the public engagement team.

Applicants should be educated to degree level or equivalent in a horticultural related subject and have proven experience in decorative horticulture.  Sound knowledge of the conservation of historic gardens and care of lawns, plants, shrubs and trees and knowledge of Health and Safety is essential.

As a dynamic and passionate manager, you will be an engaging communicator with the skills and experience to enable, lead and inspire the team. You will enjoy working closely with colleagues across departments to develop, deliver and maintain a 5 star experience within the gardens. You will have strong planning and organisation skills, experience of managing budgets and be competent in all word packages.  A full clean driving licence is also required in this role.
