Horticulture Apprenticeship (level 2) - Hampton Court Palace
Historic Royal Palaces is the independent charity that looks after the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace, the Banqueting House, Kew Palace and Hillsborough Castle & Gardens.
Historic Royal Palaces is a team of people who love and look after six of the most wonderful palaces in the world including their magnificent historical gardens.
In collaboration with Royal Parks and Capel Manor, we are running a Horticulture Apprenticeship for an Apprentice Gardener position at Hampton Court Palace, giving you a fantastic opportunity to grow your horticultural skills whilst working in one of the UK’s most famous Gardens.
Being a horticultural apprentice is an exciting challenge – often physically demanding, but hugely rewarding. You will be training within a horticultural environment, working alongside and learning from our experienced and dedicated Gardens team, developing skills and horticultural knowledge such as
- Planting flower beds, shrubs, trees, and perennials.
- Hedge cutting, light pruning, and trimming.
- Understanding and responding to the challenges presented by climate change and sustainability.
- Identifying and recognizing a selection of basic plants.
- Learning to use a wide range of horticultural and agricultural plants and machinery.
- Ad-hoc soft landscaping
- Becoming familiar with the general history of Hampton Court Palace.
- Interacting with customers and visitors and helping them to get the most from their visit.
You will study for a minimum of 2 years to achieve a Level 2 qualification in Horticultural Operations. At the end of 3 years, you could leave us with a Level 2 Royal Horticultural Society certificate in Practical Horticulture – giving you a thorough grounding in all areas of horticulture and park management.
With ambitions to become a leader in our sector, at Historic Royal Palaces we are developing a wider program of apprenticeships, paid internships and scholarships. You will gain access to the many resources we are developing to help you gain knowledge and practical skills to work in the heritage world. Our horticulture apprentices will attend masterclass days and celebration events as part of their apprenticeship and will also be supported by our partners, The Royal Parks Guild.
If you have a positive attitude, a can-do approach, and a passion for gardening, this could be the right opportunity for you.
We are looking for someone who is keen to learn, wants to be a team player, and, due to the nature of the role, is willing to work outside in all weathers. You will also need good communication skills and time keeping, as well as the ability to use your own initiative and interact positively with our visitors.
